The transition towards a circular economy requires the pro-active management of products and materials into continuous cycles. However, very little information about the circular characteristics of products or materials is available today, which leads to downcycling. An international, standardized format for circularity data is a key element for a successful transition to a circular economy. The PCDS builds on work that was done by EPEA and partners under the Buildings As Material Banks (www.bamb2020.eu) project. In this project, the Material Passport format for products was developed and tested on more than 400 products for the construction sector. One of the key lessons learned, was the necessity to standardize the format internationally and to make it applicable across industry sectors, which is what the PCDS initiative aims to do.
